Tension Bands for Chain Link Fences

Tension bands fasten the tension bar to terminal posts so the chain link fabric stays tight, straight, and supported at ends, corners, and gates.

Overview

What Tension Bands Do

Chain link fabric is finished at a terminal post (end, corner, or gate post) with a tension bar. Tension bands wrap the post and bolt through the tension bar to clamp the assembly tight. This is the connection that transfers fabric tension into the post.

Where theyโ€™re used

End posts, corner posts, and gate postsโ€”anywhere the fabric terminates or changes direction.

What they work with

Tension bar, carriage bolt with nut, and the terminal post. Bands are sized to match the post diameter.

Why they matter

Correct band count and spacing helps prevent sagging fabric, loose ends, and premature wear at the highest-stress points of the fence line.

Common materials

Galvanized steel is most common. Black vinyl-coated systems use coated bands to match and improve corrosion resistance.

Typical Band Count by Fence Height

As a rule of thumb, many chain link installs use one tension band per foot of fence height at each terminal connection (end/corner/gate post), plus one extra band. Examples: 4 ft โ‰ˆ 5 bands, 5 ft โ‰ˆ 6 bands, 6 ft โ‰ˆ 7 bands, 8 ft โ‰ˆ 9 bands. Actual needs vary by fabric gauge, wind load, tension, post size, and site conditionsโ€”your installer may specify more for high-stress areas.

Replacement Scenarios

Tension bands are small parts, but theyโ€™re critical at terminal posts. Replacement is common when bands are bent (impact damage), rusted through (coastal or wet conditions), missing after prior repairs, or after a fence is re-tensioned and the hardware no longer clamps securely. If the fabric edge is loose at an end/corner, or the tension bar can move, itโ€™s time to have the terminal hardware inspected.
