Fence eye tops for chain link top rail

Eye tops (loop caps) are small fittings that sit on top of a line post and support the top rail. The right size keeps the rail straight, reduces rattle, and helps your chain link fence stay tight and aligned.

What it is

What an eye top does

An eye top (often called a loop cap) installs on top of a line post and provides a circular opening (โ€œeyeโ€) for the top rail to pass through. Itโ€™s a small part, but it helps keep the fence line straight and the fabric properly supported.

Supports the top rail

The eye keeps the rail centered and level across each line post so the rail doesnโ€™t sag or drift out of alignment.

Reduces movement and noise

Correct fit helps prevent rail rattle in wind and reduces wear at connection points over time.

Maintains fence geometry

A consistent rail height makes it easier to keep the chain link fabric tight and the fence line visually clean.

Works with terminal posts

At ends/corners/gates, the rail typically terminates into a terminal fitting instead of passing through an eye top.

Sizing: how to choose the right eye top

Eye tops are sized to match your post outside diameter (OD) and the top rail OD. Most sizing is based on the post size (the cap must fit the post), and the โ€œeyeโ€ is made to accept the matching rail size. If youโ€™re replacing one fitting, match whatโ€™s installed now or measure the post and rail directly.

Common replacement scenarios

Eye tops are inexpensive parts, but a damaged or incorrect size can cause bigger issues along the fence line.

Replace eye tops when you see cracks, missing eyes, bent caps, heavy rust, or when the top rail is no longer sitting level through the line posts. Theyโ€™re also commonly replaced after storm damage, vehicle impact, or when upgrading rail/fabric sizes during a partial rebuild.
