Fence tension bars for chain-link

Tension bars are vertical steel bars that secure chain-link fabric to terminal posts. When they’re sized and installed correctly, they keep the fabric tight, straight, and secure at ends, corners, and gate posts.

What a tension bar does

In chain-link fencing, the tension bar works with tension bands to clamp the fabric to a terminal post. This connection transfers pull from the stretched fabric into the post so the fence line stays tight.

Basics

Where tension bars are used

You’ll find tension bars anywhere chain-link fabric terminates or changes direction.

End posts (start/stop of a run)

Corner posts (direction changes)

Gate posts (hinge and latch sides)

Sizing

How to size a tension bar

A tension bar should match the height of the chain-link fabric. The bar slides through the end of the fabric and should run the full height so the pull is distributed evenly.

Match bar length to fabric height (e.g., 4′, 5′, 6′, 8′)

Use a bar compatible with your mesh gauge and selvage type

Choose galvanized or vinyl-coated to match the fence finish

Placement

Correct placement and hardware

The tension bar sits between the fabric and the terminal post, held in place by tension bands and carriage bolts spaced down the post.

When tension bars need replacement

Replace tension bars when they’re bent, heavily rusted, missing, or when the fabric is slipping at a terminal post. Common signs include a wavy fence line near the end post, loose fabric you can pull away from the post, missing tension bands/bolts, or a gate opening that no longer stays square. After storms, vehicle impact, or repeated gate stress, it’s smart to inspect terminal connections and re-tension the fabric if needed.

If your chain-link is loose at an end, corner, or gate post, we can inspect the terminal hardware, replace damaged parts, and re-tension the fabric for a clean, secure finish.
